At District 113, student health and well-being are at the heart of what we do. Our Health Services team is committed to supporting students and families by offering reliable access to important health information, guidance, and care.

You can also learn more about how we manage medications during the school day, what to do if your child becomes ill and how we determine when it’s appropriate for a student to return to school after being sick.

Staying Home and Leaving School due to an Illness

When to Keep Your Child Home from School

To help maintain a healthy school environment, please review the following guidelines when deciding whether your child should stay home from school:

A fever of 100°F or higher: Students should remain home until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
Unexplained vomiting or diarrhea: Keep your child home until symptoms have resolved
Persistent coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing: These may indicate a contagious or more serious illness
A new rash with a fever: Your child may return once the rash has resolved or a health care provider clears them
A skin lesion or sore that is worsening or cannot be covered with a bandage
If your child is prescribed antibiotics for a contagious illness, they may return after taking the antibiotic for at least 24 hours
Any symptom that limits participation in school activities or requires more care than school staff can safely provide

Leaving School Due to Illness

If a student becomes ill during the school day, they must follow the procedures outlined in the Student Handbook. Students who are feeling sick or injured should report to Health Services to be evaluated by one of the school nurses. If it is determined that the student needs to go home, Health Services will contact the student’s parent or guardian. Once approved, the student will be issued a pass to exit through security at the main entrance on Vine Avenue.

It is important to note that students who leave campus without following this process will receive an unexcused absence for any missed classes. These absences will not be reversed.

Parents or guardians should not call the Attendance Office to report that a student is going home due to illness during the school day. Instead, please contact Health Services directly using the information provided at the bottom of this page.

Please note: if your student has left school ill and returns on the same day, they must sign in through the Health Services office.

Managing Known Health Conditions at School

If your student has a known health condition—such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, or food allergies—please work with Health Services to ensure we have the necessary documentation and supplies to support them during the school day.

We ask that you provide the following:

A completed Permission to Administer Medication form
An up-to-date Action Plan from your child’s healthcare provider
Any necessary medical supplies your student may require during the school day

District 113 Health Services maintains a limited stock of over-the-counter medications, including acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin). These can only be administered if a current Permission to Administer Medication form is on file for your student.

Please note: In accordance with District 113 policy, students are not permitted to carry any medication—prescription or non-prescription—on campus. The only exceptions are for epinephrine auto-injectors, asthma rescue inhalers, and diabetes-related medications, which may be carried with proper documentation.

Religious Exemptions

If you are requesting a religious exemption from any of the Illinois State required vaccinations, the Illinois Certificate of Religious Exemption form must be completed and signed by a physician. Please submit this form along with the Illinois Child Health Examination Form before October 15th to avoid school exclusion.

Medical Exemptions

If your student has a medical contraindication for any of the required Illinois State vaccines, please have your health care provider write a letter stating the following:

A list of vaccines that are medically contraindicated.
The reason why they are medically contraindicated.
Should the medical condition of the child later indicate that immunization is no longer contraindicated to the health of the child, the immunization requirements will then have to be met. Please submit this form along with the Illinois Child Health Examination Form before October 15th to avoid school exclusion.

Senior Meningococcal Requirement

The State of Illinois requires that all seniors receive a second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4, Menveo, Menactra). If your student received one dose after the age of 16, they do not need a second dose. When your student receives this vaccination, send proof of the vaccination to Health Services. For your student to be compliant with the senior Illinois state requirement, please submit one of the following:

Proof of vaccination
Proof of appointment for vaccination and proof of vaccination submitted immediately after appointment
Illinois Certification of Religious Exemption form
- This form must be signed by a physician per Illinois state requirements
