PSAT-NSMQT
August 2025
Dear parents/guardians of DHS sophomores and juniors,
On Saturday, October 18, 2025, sophomore and junior students have the opportunity to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). We strongly encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity. The school district will cover the costs to take this test for all interested students.
This free test is available to all sophomores and juniors and is the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Juniors who score very well enter the National Merit Scholarship competition. The PSAT/NMSQT is also a valuable opportunity for junior students to experience a test with content similar to the SAT.
For the October PSAT/NMSQT, students may bring their own device rather than using a district issued device. Please note that we will not be able to provide technology support for non-district issued laptops and devices.
Some other important information to know regarding the transition to digital testing include:
- Students may bring their own calculator if they so choose, however, it is not required. An appropriate calculator for the mathematics section is built into the testing application of the PSAT/NMSQT for those students who do not bring their own calculator to the exam.
- All special testing accommodations on file with and approved by College Board will be built into the individual student’s testing application. The following link provides specific information about using accommodations on digital tests.
The test contains two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. The combined testing time for the test is 2 hours and 14 minutes. With testing preparation and breaks, students should expect to be in the testing environment for approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Testing on Saturday, October 18, 2025 will begin at 8:30 am. To learn more about the content and structure of the PSAT/NMSQT, please visit the College Board website.
In order to best prepare for the administration of this exam, students must fill out the PSAT/NMSQT Registration Form to confirm registration and attendance. Please complete this form no later than 3:30 pm on Monday, September 15th 2025. No request made after this deadline can be accepted due to College Board’s registration timeline.
Students who are interested in taking the Fall 2025 PSAT/NMSQT but have unavoidable conflicts will be able to take a make-up exam during school hours on Tuesday, October 21. The make-up exam will require students to miss class during the time of the exam. While the absences from class will be considered excused, it will be expected that students make up any missed work. In addition to filling out the PSAT/NMSQT Registration Form above please fill out the PSAT/NMSQT Conflict Form to request taking the test during the make-up time.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions regarding the PSAT/NMSQT.
Sincerely,
